Friendorse: Local secrets from the people close to you

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching on Sunday, May 13 and Friendorse is going to help one lucky person (maybe you) put a smile on mum’s face.

Here’s how you can win a beautiful bouquet of flowers;

Step 2) Provide a comment telling us in 3 sentences or less why your mum is the best and deserves the flowers. Have fun, be clever and show your mum some love. The comment with the most “Likes” will win the flowers so be sure to share with all of your friends.

To toast a cool and wet summer goodbye, Friendorse celebrated the arrival of autumn with a contest in March for one lucky person to win the new Apple iPad. All suburbs in the Friendorse community were invited to join in on the fun. A winner was chosen who asked and answered the most questions from the suburb with the most new sign-ups. The response was overwhelming and while we wish we could have awarded everyone, we only had one New iPad to give away.

So, without further ado (drum roll please)……

How to filter water cheaply but effectively

We loved this answer from Timothy Skinner:

If you have access to clay, coffee grounds and a pottery kiln you can make a filter using equal parts clay and coffee grounds well combined and formed into a bowl then fired. The coffee grounds burn away to leave air pockets which trap microbes, including germs, while the clean water passes through.

This was developed by a humanitarian looking for an effective yet easily attainable water filter for third world countries.

So it’s been months of work in the making but we are proud to introduce the new Friendorse site to you.
You will notice some big changes to the design after we went back to the drawing board (so to speak) to come up with a simpler design with mobile in mind. We’ve had some great feedback from everyone so far, but let us know your thoughts.

Obviously it’s not about making everything look pretty. We’ve introduced some improvements and new features that we’re pretty proud of. Here’s a quick breakdown of the main ones:

1. First-up you can now login with an email address and no longer have to use Facebook Connect. For people already connected through Facebook, then just continue as you did before. We’ll be adding Twitter soon too, for all the twitterati out there who wish to connect this way.

2. You’ll now notice that some people have stars under their name. That’s because we’ve introduced a rating system to identify those who contribute the most to the community. You can get points by doing the following:

- Asking a question (20 points)
- Answering a question (30 points)
- Giving thanks (10 points)
- Getting thanks (35 points)
- Inviting people to join (5 points per person)
- Having the best answer, as chosen by the person asking the question) (40 points)
- Your answer helped (5 points)

To get one star you need 50 points, for two stars 150 points and for three stars 400 points.

3. We now have suburb gurus – that is the person in every suburb with the most points. You can lose suburb guru status if someone overtakes you in points. So watch out.

4. Suburbs with less than 10 people will need to be activated in order to have questions answered. So if you ask a question in a non-activated suburb please invite all your friends. We haven’t done this to be annoying, but we’ve found Friendorse works best when there is 10 people at minimum in a suburb. So help us unlock these suburbs.
